Travel to Mexico City by Airplane

Mexico City International Airport (AICM – Benito Juárez)

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) is Mexico’s largest and busiest airport, serving as the main hub for the Mexico City metropolitan area and the entire country. It handles over 50 million passengers annually and is served by more than 30 airlines. You can fly to over 100 destinations worldwide, making it an excellent starting point for any traveller.

In addition to connecting you to almost anywhere, AICM offers a wide range of services: more than 100 shops, over 60 restaurants, cafés and bars, numerous currency exchange offices, ATMs, VIP lounges, and other commercial services. There are also several hotels nearby if you need a comfortable place to rest, including Hilton Mexico City Airport, Courtyard by Marriott Mexico City Airport, Camino Real Aeropuerto, NH Collection Mexico City Airport T2, and others.

If you arrive by car, the airport has thousands of parking spaces in short-term, long-term, and valet options. Regardless of which terminal you are using, you will always be close to your flight. It is recommended to book parking in advance during peak seasons to secure a spot.

How to get to and from Mexico City International Airport

Rental car

At AICM, you can rent cars from major companies, including Hertz, Avis, Alamo, Europcar, Sixt, and others.  The car rental offices are located in the designated rental car area in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Taxi

Official airport taxis (Sitio Autorizado) are available right outside both terminals. Use only the authorised taxi stands inside the terminals — never accept offers from people approaching you in the arrivals area. There are also executive and eco-friendly taxi options available. Fares to the city centre usually range between MXN 300–700, depending on zone and time of day.

Private transportation / Airport shuttles

Services like Uber, DiDi, and Cabify operate at the airport (pickup zones are clearly signposted). Many hotels offer private shuttle services — check with your accommodation in advance.

Public transport

  • Metro: The Metro station closest to the airport is Terminal Aérea (Line 5), but it requires a short walk or local transport.

  • Metrobús: The Metrobús Línea 4 connects the airport to the city centre (direction Buenavista). Stops are located outside both terminals.

  • Airport buses (Express): Several companies operate express buses to key points in the city, such as the Historic Centre, Polanco, Santa Fe, and Roma/Condesa. They are comfortable, safe, and affordable. Tickets can be purchased at counters inside the terminals or online.

Toluca International Airport is located about 60 km southwest of Mexico City and serves as an important alternative airport for the metropolitan area. It handles around 2–3 million passengers per year and is used mainly by low-cost carriers such as Volaris and some domestic routes.

One of its main advantages is that everything is close at hand: check-in, security, baggage claim, ground transport, and parking (several thousand spaces available). The terminal includes shops, restaurants, a currency exchange, and other services. Its relative proximity to western Mexico City makes it a convenient option for travellers avoiding the busier AICM.
