Travel to Mexico City by Train
Nowadays, getting to Mexico City by train from other parts of the country is becoming increasingly popular, thanks to modern high-speed and intercity services. Most long-distance routes are operated by Tren Maya (on the southeast network), El Insurgente (Mexico City–Toluca), and the classic Ferromex and Kansas City Southern de México lines for freight/passenger combos, with passenger services expanding rapidly.
The main high-speed service is El Insurgente, connecting Toluca with Mexico City in approximately 39 minutes. If you travel from Querétaro or Puebla on intercity routes, travel time is about 2–3 hours, depending on the line. Use the official websites treninsurgente.com.mx or kcsdmx.mx to check schedules, prices, buy tickets online, and find all the important information for your trip.
If you’re travelling from Toluca or nearby cities, El Insurgente is the fastest and most comfortable option. More information is available at treninsurgente.com.mx.
Buenavista Station
(Mexico City’s Main Railway Station – Estación Buenavista)
Mexico City’s Buenavista Station is the largest and most important railway station in the country. The main entrance is from Avenida Insurgentes Norte, and since its modernisation, it has been the natural hub for people travelling to and from Mexico City by train.
Whether you’re travelling on local commuter services (such as the Tren Suburbano) or long-distance routes, your train will depart from or arrive at Buenavista Station.
Right next door is the main bus terminal (Terminal de Autobuses del Norte), and the Metrobús, Metro (Lines 1, B and N), and commuter train system are only a short walk away, so you can easily continue your journey. Just outside, you can also catch buses to Teotihuacán, Querétaro, and many other destinations.
Going to the Airport?
If you need to get to Mexico City International Airport (AICM), the Metrobús Línea 4 runs directly from Buenavista to the airport terminals. The airport express buses (such as those from the AICM shuttle services) also have connections nearby.

Inside the station concourse, you’ll find ticket offices for trains, buses and Metro, currency exchange offices, ATMs, a police station, luggage storage, free Wi-Fi, and other public facilities.
